I...I like your idea of bringing in their ancestry. It's a good way to get them interested.

How I teach the grid system is by first using the game "Battleship" and then using tape to make my room into a grid.

I start off with letting them sit with a partner of their choosing to play the game with (yes, I've got 15 battleship sets)and let them play for the last 15 minutes of class the first day I go over geography with them. Then the next day, I have the room set up in a grid pattern using masking tape with each desk being in a cell and as the students come in I give them a coordinate to sit at.

I start off with a typical alpha-numeric pattern, and then by the second week (students sit in a different coordinate everyday for the first week) then I change the alpha coordinate to a latitude coordinate and the numeric to a longitude coordinate for them to sit at. Yes, I put in an "equator" line so they can understand what makes a latitude line what it is, and a "prime meridian" line so they can understand why longitude coordinates are what they are.

It takes some practice, but my students' understand and it makes seating charts a snap! : )Milinda Montgomeryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08312691408382963635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3719829936413556877.post-66407285603777619662011-02-22T18:12:11.131-08:002011-02-22T18:12:11.131-08:00What a great post!
